Federal government funds drones for fawn rescue in 2026 – 2.1 million euros for thermal imaging UAVs

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Home Affairs (BMLEH) is sending a strong signal in 2026 for practical animal welfare and digital innovation in rural areas: the federal funding program for the purchase of drones equipped with thermal imaging systems for fawn rescue is being continued. A total of €2.1 million is available. A fixed amount of up to €3,000 per drone can be funded.

This makes the program one of the most visible examples of how modern UAV technology saves lives in a very concrete way – not in theory, but every spring morning when farmers mow their fields.

Why fawn rescue needs drone technology

When faced with danger, fawns instinctively press themselves into tall grass instead of fleeing. This behavior protects them from natural predators – but not from mowing machines. Without technical support, the animals are almost impossible to spot in dense vegetation.

Thermal imaging drones have fundamentally changed this process. Within minutes, fields can be systematically scanned and heat signatures identified. Volunteers can precisely locate the fawns, secure them temporarily, and enable wildlife-friendly mowing.

The funding program is therefore not merely a financial instrument, but part of a broader digitalization strategy: modern sensor technology is deployed where it creates tangible societal value.

Who is eligible to apply?

Eligible applicants include:

  • District hunting associations and hunters’ organizations registered as non-profit associations
  • Registered regional or local associations whose statutes define wildlife rescue, particularly fawn rescue, as a core objective

Not eligible are, among others:

  • Hunting cooperatives
  • Wildlife management groups organized as civil law partnerships (GbR)
  • Associations in formation
  • Sole proprietorships
  • Private individuals

Important: Each participant may submit only one application.

Procedure and deadlines

Applications must be submitted exclusively online via an electronic application system. The deadline for applications is June 30, 2026. Proof of use and the payment request must be submitted by September 30, 2026. Funding payments are scheduled to be completed by December 31, 2026.

Crucially, the drone may only be purchased after receiving a positive funding decision. Early procurement is expressly prohibited.

Legal clarity for drone operations

Another important component is the permanent regulation for drone use in wildlife rescue, in force since November 2024. Based on a general decree issued by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport, specific geographical areas over agricultural and forestry land have been designated.

Within these areas, drones weighing between 250 g and 25 kg operating in the open category A3 may, under defined conditions, deviate from the standard minimum distance to residential and commercial areas. This ensures that fawn rescue missions can continue near farms or adjacent settlements without additional bureaucratic burden.

This regulatory clarity is essential. It provides planning security for associations and volunteers and prevents well-intentioned animal welfare efforts from being hindered by formal obstacles.

More than just funding

Fawn rescue symbolizes a broader development: drones are no longer toys or purely industrial tools. They have become part of societal infrastructure – in disaster response, agriculture, and environmental protection.

By continuing the funding program, the federal government reinforces the constitutional commitment to animal welfare. At the same time, it strengthens volunteer organizations, civic engagement, and technological competence in rural regions.

In the context of the federal budget, €2.1 million may not seem like a major project. Yet the leverage is significant: every funded drone represents saved animal lives, cooperation between farmers, hunters, and volunteers, and the intelligent use of modern technology in the service of ethical responsibility.

Digital innovation meets lived animal welfare. That is where technology delivers its greatest impact.
